Mellum (mallung; mallum) is a dry leafy curry of Sri Lankan descent. Literally translating to ‘mix-up’ the curry consists of kale, beetroot leaves, silverbeet and chicory – all to be used interchangeably and in conjunction with shredded coconut, lime juice, tumeric, curry leaves and green chili. The diversity and flexibility of this curry allows it to be open to interpretation; regardless of its constituents the dish will always be loved as Mellum.
Much like the dish, Mellum is a new publicity company created by Uda Widanapathirana (of Brisbane’s Woolly Mammoth, Eunoia Collective, Monolith), striving to mix-up the range of artists that reach your eyes and ears. Diversity in genre is not the aim; Mellum respects the inextricable link between music and social movements and seeks to empower them through its work. Mellum provides a platform for artists to direct their own narratives through positive discrimination. When we tell our own stories, we enable others to do the same, we listen, we empathise – challenging whose stories are heard is the objective of Mellum. Whilst diversity in an artistic framework is the process, empathy is the aim, for without it, there is no social cohesion.
